What is Delta-8 THC?
Delta-8 THC (CββHββOβ) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid in Cannabis sativa. Delta-8 THC is a positional isomer of delta-9 THC with the double bond at the 8th rather than 9th carbon. Occurs naturally in cannabis at very low concentrations (<1%). Most commercial delta-8 is synthesised from CBD through isomerisation β not extracted from cannabis.
Pharmacology
CB1 partial agonist with ~50β75% of delta-9 THC's CB1 binding affinity. Produces psychoactive effects qualitatively similar to but less potent than delta-9 THC. Antiemetic effects described in early clinical work. Metabolised via CYP2C9 and CYP3A4.
Current Evidence
An early paediatric oncology case series (Abrahamov, 1995) reported complete prevention of CINV. No modern RCTs available. Commercial prominence driven by US regulatory arbitrage (not clinical evidence).
GMP Relevance
Critical for analytical specifications: HPLC methods must achieve baseline separation of delta-8 from delta-9 THC β some methods do not. In EU GMP manufacturing, delta-8 THC detected as an impurity (e.g. from CBD isomerisation in certain extraction processes) must be specified as a controlled impurity with defined acceptance limits.
Regulatory Status
Delta-8 THC is not independently scheduled as a controlled substance in most European jurisdictions as a component of cannabis starting material. Pharmaceutical preparations require EU GMP manufacturing standards. Specifications should include identity, purity and assay by validated HPLC.
See the Cannabis Glossary for definitions of related cultivation, extraction and quality terms.
