What is CBC?
CBC (CββHββOβ) is a naturally occurring cannabinoid in Cannabis sativa. CBC is biosynthesised from CBGA by CBCA synthase, parallel to THC and CBD biosynthesis. Present at low concentrations (typically 0.1β1%) in most cannabis varieties.
Pharmacology
CBC is non-psychoactive β minimal CB1 binding. Activates TRPV1 and TRPA1 channels and inhibits anandamide reuptake, increasing endocannabinoid tone. Mechanisms associated with anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antidepressant effects in preclinical models.
Current Evidence
No completed RCTs for any indication as of 2026. Preclinical evidence includes anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antidepressant and sebostatic effects. Clinical translation is not yet established.
GMP Relevance
Include CBC in comprehensive cannabinoid profiling HPLC methods. HPLC methods validated for THC and CBD should include CBC in the analytical panel with validated specificity for its separation from other cannabinoids.
Regulatory Status
CBC is not independently scheduled as a controlled substance in most European jurisdictions as a component of cannabis starting material. Pharmaceutical preparations require EU GMP manufacturing standards. Specifications should include identity, purity and assay by validated HPLC.
